MY ROBBEN ISLAND

Reflections on the Island: A Series of Sketches by Nelson Mandela

"My Robben Island" is the title of artwork by the former president of South African and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize Nelson Mandela. The Robben Island Series of charcoal and pastel sketches was completed by Nelson Mandela between March and June 2002. He chose to portray subjects which held personal significance on both a symbolic as well as on an emotional level.

Nelson Mandela's drawings are characterized by strong, simple lines highlighted with intense color. Each of the lithographs is signed and numbered by Nelson Mandela. The first series consists of 500 lithographs of each image and the second of 350.

The "My Robben Island" lithographs have been printed on Velin BFK Rives paper. The processing, proofing and printing of the series was done under the supervision of the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. All the printing materials and plates were destroyed on completion of the printing of the lithographs. Proceeds from the sale of the lithographs will be awarded to the Nelson Mandela Trust, an organisation that has been specifically created to distribute funds to programmes and projects that Nelson Mandela personally supports.
